TEACHING

MY PHILOSOPHY

After many years of my academic career as a researcher, followed by 15 years of industrial experience as head of the lab, I was hired as University Professor and have successfully undergone the tenure and promotion process at the UHD, a historically Hispanic-serving university with one of the most diverse student bodies in the U.S.

This fact allows me to actively promote diversity, equality, inclusiveness, and antiracism—the values dear to me, my university, and the Fulbright Program. The above proves my capacity to adapt to and be effective in different demanding classroom and laboratory situations.

To maximize material intake and retention for all students, I adopted the philosophy that the leading educational factor in experimental Physics is the discovery students make during the laboratory exercise. Then students are explained particular phenomena in the lab and in a broader context during the lecture. This process is especially useful in research work.

MY INITIATIVES

  • I enjoy creating new teaching initiatives. I organized and developed Physics Minor at the University of Houston-Downtown.  The program is available for all majors at the College of Sciences and Technology.

  • Thermophysical Properties of Materials. I organized this summer school at my home university to bring together Polish and American lecturers from the field, as well as students from both countries.

  • Based on my academic and industrial experience, I created a new course offered for senior students every semester: Thermophysical Properties of Materials (lecture + lab)

  • Introduced Nuclear Engineering education to UHD in cooperation with Texas A&M University. Instrumental in its development over 10 years (as PI/Co-PI, over 100 students benefitted). It expands the Scholars Academy scholarship program and helped to establish a Health Physics course.

  • In 2013, I came up with the idea of organizing an international summer school on Reposition of Nuclear Spent Fuel in Geological Formations. Together with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, I initiated this project organized in Oskarshamn, Sweden. I taught in its first three editions.

  • My most recent initiative is the introduction of a Mathematics and Physics Education major at the University of Houston-Downtown (under development).

  • Following my passion for international education, I have recently proposed the organization of the European-American Summer School on Rocks for Energy as part of my future collaboration project with AGH UST.
